MADISON, Wis. – Grace Latz (Jackson, Michigan) will represent her country at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games, which are set for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Aug. 5-21.
The 16th Wisconsin women's rower named to the U.S. Olympic Team all-time, Latz will look to become the first Badger medalist in women's rowing since the 1992 Olympics.
Named to the women's quadruple sculls, Latz is familiar with the event, having won a bronze medal in the event at the 2014 World Championships. Latz also boasts a gold medal from last year's world championships rowing with the four without coxswain.
Latz rowed at Wisconsin from 2006 to 2010 and was part of the first and only Big Ten championship in rowing for the Badgers.
With Latz named to the Olympic team its keeps Wisconsin's streak alive of having at least one rower in every Olympics back to 1968.
Two other Badgers were close to making the team, but fell short. Latz' 2010 teammate Vicki Opitz (Middleton, Wisconsin), who is a three-time world champion with the women's eight, was left out of the women's eight for the Olympics after battling injury. Also, men's rower Tim Aghai (Skokie, Illinois) reached the final of the men's pair, but finished third in the four-boat race that sent its winner to Rio.
