Big Ten Coach of the Year Bebe Bryans anchored staff
MADISON, Wis. – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has announced that the University of Wisconsin women's rowing coaching staff is one of its five Regional Staffs of the Year.
Led by Big Ten Coach of the Year Bebe Bryans, and made up of assistant coaches Nancy LaRocque and Jim Mitchell, as well as graduate assistant coach Joanna Poinsatte, the coaching staff directed the Badgers to a ninth-place NCAA finish, the school's best since 2011. The staff also led the team to a second-place finish at the 2016 Big Ten Championships, which marked the program's highest placement since winning the league title in 2010.
Highlighting the work of Bryans, LaRocque and Poinsatte, the varsity eight equaled its best-ever NCAA finish by placing ninth at the championships. Mitchell, who spent his time with the novice team, led the Badgers novice eight and second novice eight to undefeated seasons and Big Ten championships.
The CRCA Regional Staff of the Year award is intended to recognize a staff that fits one or more of the following criteria: Outstanding success during the current season, demonstrated great team improvement from the prior season, fulfilled team's potential and demonstrated a high level of professionalism and integrity as a coach.
The five Regional Staffs of the Year, which include Wisconsin, Yale, Canisius, Duke and Gonzaga, are now up for the CRCA National Staff of the Year.
