Skogen just one stroke off lead after opening round 70
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team started its season on a high note Sunday by finishing in third place after the first day of the Badger Invitational at the University Ridge Golf Course.

After netting an even par 288, UW is just two strokes off leaders Illinois State and Iowa State in the 13-team field.

"It was a really solid start and there was a certain comfort level for some of the younger guys being home," UW head coach Michael Burcin said. "It was a really solid start. The wind blew at times really hard but we're in a good position."

Senior Ben Skogen (70) is tied for fifth place on the player leaderboard at 2-under to lead all Badgers. Making his freshman debut, Nick Robinson shot an even 72 to be tied for 14th place. At 1-over, senior Eddie Wajda, junior Johnny Decker and sophomore Jordan Hahn are tied for 19th place.

Competing as individuals, freshman Pete Kuhl (73) is tied for 19th place and senior Tommy Schofield (76) is 4-over to be tied for 52nd place. At 6-over, sophomore Brett Robinson is tied for 71st while junior Michael Abrahamson (80) is 77th at 8-over.

Tee times begin at 9 a.m on Monday, while Tuesday's third round will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

"The kids are excited to get back out and the wind is going to blow a little harder tomorrow so hopefully that works in our favor," Burcin said. "There was definitely good momentum today and I think the kids are excited to build on that tomorrow."
