ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior forward Sophia Shaver scored twice to lead the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team to a 3-1 win over No. 7 Cornell on Friday at Lynah Rink.

With less than 10 minutes to play in the first frame, Shaver notched her first goal of the game after flicking a pass from junior Mikaela Gardner into the Cornell (3-2-0) net to give Wisconsin (15-0-0) a 1-0 lead.

Just 16 seconds into the second period, Shaver slotted the puck through traffic and past Cornell goaltender Marlene Boissonnault to grab her second goal of the night, putting the Badgers up 2-0 over the Big Red. It marked her second career multi-goal game.

Alexis Mauermann knocked home a rebound on a UW power play with 12 minutes remaining in the second frame to tally her seventh goal of the season to give UW a 3-0 lead.

The Big Red scored with just over three minutes to go in the second period, but the UW defense held tough in the third to hold onto the victory.

Three notes of the game

• Kristen Campbell stopped 21 of the 22 shots she faced to improve to 15-0-0 on the season
• Mauermann, the reigning WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, now has a four-game goal streak dating back to UW's 2-1 win at Minnesota on Oct. 29.
• Wisconsin was a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

UW's penalty kill unit came up huge in the third period, as the Big Red had a 5-on-3 power play for a minute in the final frame. In the final minute of the third, the Badgers had to kill off another penalty with the Cornell goaltender pulled.

On the importance of the win:
"Every single weekend we're improving our game, and it's nice against competitive teams, especially on the road, to get a win like that."

On what clicked with her line today:
"I think we were just trying to get puck to the net. Coach kept harping on us to get to pucks to the net, and just doing the little things like working on our face-offs that we practice in practice. Just getting the puck through."

On the penalty kill:
"Obviously on the penalty kill team we were really strong. I think that comes from the defense. They were doing a really great job. I was seeing the puck, and when I wasn't I was battling for a sight line and trying to absorb the shots. I think we did a great job on the penalty kill today."

On adjustments for Saturday's game:
"I think going into tomorrow with just a little more discipline. Obviously there were quite a few penalties called so I think if we keep that side of the aspect in check, I think we're going to be great out there tomorrow."
