Callie at the Catch: All-Boathouse 2k
March 22, 2017 | Women's Rowing
For one day a year, three teams are one
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert will be giving regular updates this winter and spring from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the junior raced mainly as part of the second varsity eight last season, helping her boat to a top-10 finish at the 2016 NCAA Championships. Â
MADISON, Wis. -- Porter Boathouse houses three separate teams: women's openweight, women's lightweight and men's. Most of the time we all train separately in our own erg bay, in our own boats, with different practice schedules and coaches, and we race at separate regattas. But, on this one day a year we come together as Wisconsin rowing and race a 2k (2 kilometers) on the ergs to show all of the hard work we have put in this winter before we head out onto the water.
          Â
For a first timer, freshman Taylor Caudle said the "all boathouse 2k was such a cool experience, we had a chance to cheer on the lightweight team and the men's team and see what they could do, as well as being able to show them what we do."
Not knowing what to expect, Taylor "walked into the erg bay and could immediately feel the energy and excitement. Girls on the team had been getting personal best times all day and it set up a great atmosphere for the rest of us to live up to. It was really cool to be invested, not only in our own results, but also those of our teammates and pull for their success," Taylor added.
           Â
Probably the best part about this day is how the ergs are arranged. We set up two long rows of ergs across all three of our erg bays, but with an added kicker. The two rows are lined up face-to-face for a fun face off! This keeps energy high and our competitive mindsets heightened.
"The all-boathouse 2k is a great opportunity to see all the hard work we put in over the winter pay off and for most of the team, it was a success!" states sophomore Alison Morrison. "The coaches expect us to go fast because of the long winter training season and it is a fun way to start off the spring racing season by racing each other."
It was a great way to end our Winter 2 season and sets us up well for our upcoming racing season. The Badgers are now set off to the Sunshine State of Florida for a weeklong spring training trip over Spring break. More to come on that next week!
