Fourth time in the last five years UW has advanced to the postseason
MADISON, Wis. – For the fourth time in the last five seasons, the Wisconsin women's golf team has earned the right to play in the NCAA Regional Championships. It was announced Thursday that the Badgers will compete in the Columbus Regional on May 8-10.
The tournament will be played at the Ohio State University Golf Club on the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio.
It is the eighth time in school history the Badgers have qualified for an NCAA regional event. A total of 18 teams and six individuals were chosen to compete at each regional site. Six other Big Ten teams were selected, including three others competing in Columbus: Purdue, Ohio State and Michigan (Columbus), Illinois (Albuquerque), Michigan State and Northwestern (Athens).
Six teams and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams will advance from each regional to the NCAA Championships, which will take place at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, from May 19-24.
Last season, senior Brooke Ferrell competed as an individual in Bryan, Texas, where the 2017 All-Big Ten honoree tied for 59th (78-71-78=227). In 2015, the Badgers played in the St. George Regional at Snow Canyon Country Club in St. George, Utah. Led by Ferrell (72-75-77=224), the Badgers tied for 13th with three other current Badgers in the lineup: Gabby Curtis, Michelle Cheung and Becky Klongland.
Ferrell, who competed as part of UW's regional-qualifying teams in 2014 and 2015 and qualified as an individual last season, will become the first Badger player to participate in four regional championships in her career.
UW's best regional showing came in 2003, when the Badgers finished sixth in Lincoln, Nebraska, to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The Badgers also reached the NCAA Championships in 2013 after placing seventh at the Central Regional in Norman, Oklahoma.
Just over a week ago, the Badgers finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships. Klongland (72-73-74=219) tied for eighth to lead UW, while Reinecke and Ferrell both tied for 17th at 8-over and Zeng nabbed a tie for 25th to record four top-25 finishes for the Badgers.
