UW to play host to Michigan Tech in first game of the 2017-18 campaign
MADISON, Wis.— The Wisconsin men's hockey team will open its 2017-18 campaign with the United States Hockey Hall of Fame Game in Madison on Sunday, Oct. 1 against Michigan Tech.
The first regular-season game will come quickly for the Badgers as official practice starts on Saturday, Sept. 30, just one day earlier. Last season, Wisconsin opened with an exhibition against Victoria.
The time for the game is still to be announced.
UW will have a strong opening opponent in Michigan Tech, which finished second in the WCHA during the regular season and won the Broadmoor Trophy, the WCHA's conference title, by defeating Bowling Green in double overtime to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Huskies fell to the eventual national champions, Denver, 5-2 in the opening round of the national tournament.
The two teams are former WCHA opponents, having met 156 times, with the Badgers owning a 99-47-10 advantage and a 61-18-6 record in Madison. The last time the two teams met was for a series in Madison on Jan. 2-3, 2015. Michigan Tech took the opening game, but the Badgers bounced back the next night, earning a 2-0 victory over the fifth-ranked Huskies.
The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game is an exempt game, that is played every season, with much of the proceeds supporting the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and Museum in Eveleth, Minnesota.
This game provides the opportunity for UW and Michigan Tech to play one additional game above and beyond the NCAA maximum normally allowed in a season. In essence, this is an "extra" regular season game for both the Badgers and Huskies during the 2017-18 season.

Times for games will be announced in the coming months. Dates are subject to change.
