Coach led Badgers to first Rose Bowl appearance before becoming AD
Â
MADISON, Wis. — Ivy Williamson took Wisconsin's football team all the way to No. 1. For one week, at least.
Hired as head coach in 1949, Williamson directed Badgers teams that finished as Big Ten runner-up in 1950 and '51 before claiming the conference title in 1952 to give Wisconsin its first bowl bid. Along the way that season, he helped UW reach the top spot in the Associated Press poll behind the passing of quarterback Jim Haluska and a running back named Alan Ameche.
Williamson went on to serve as athletic director and remains the namesake of the UW football program's longest-running team honor, the Ivan B. Williamson Scholastic Award.
