Goal from junior lifts Wisconsin over Kentucky
MADISON, Wis. – Emily Borgmann made sure the Wisconsin women's soccer team opened the 2017 season with a victory. After the junior forward blasted in the first goal of the season, the defense did the rest and the Badgers earned a 1-0 win over Kentucky at McClimon Complex on Friday night.
Beautifully redirecting the ball, sophomore Payton Wesley offered up the assist on Borgmann's goal in the 77th minute, which marked the seventh score of Borgmann's career. It was the fourth assist of Wesley's career.
UW outshot Kentucky, 12-5, with nine of its 12 shots on goal. The Badgers also out-did the Wildcats in corner kicks, 5-3.
Freshman Cameron Murtha made an opening statement in her first game for the Cardinal and White and led the team in shots with three. Murtha was followed close behind by Victoria Pickett and Alexis Tye, who each logged two shots apiece.
Wisconsin goalkeeper Caitlyn Clem had a solid season debut in net and recorded her first shutout with one save.
Straight from the Pitch:
Head Coach Paula Wilkins
"Anytime you can get a win on opening weekend it's pretty good. Kentucky posed a lot of problems that I think will make us better and prepare us for the Big Ten after we go back and watch video. All-in-all, I think this game was good for us moving forward with some promising things that we will work on and get better at. It was especially good to have our young players get on the field and get some good experience."
