Wellhausen previews the Badgers regular-season opener
Happy Gameday Eve Badger Fans!
I'm currently sitting in the locker room watching an intense game of Mario Kart as throwback Disney Channel songs blast in the background, clashing with the wannabe karaoke singers in the group. This is just a glimpse of a typical day in the life of our crazy awesome team. It's almost gameday. We're pretty hyped.
Last Saturday the Badgers defeated the Korean National Team, 8-0, in our first exhibition game at LaBahn. The scoring was widespread, featuring two goals a piece by my co-captain Claudia Kepler and sophomore Alexis Mauermann in front of the hometown crowd. Freshmen Delaney Drake, Caitlin Schneider, and Brette Pettet, along with sophomore Presley Norby, also contributed.
Assistant captain Lauren Williams had a stellar performance as well, capturing an assist, as did Maddie Rowe with 2 apples. Everyone came to play.
"It was a good chance for all of us to get our feet wet," Mauermann noted. "Especially for the freshmen, it was a very good chance for them to experience a game before our regular season starts. It helped us mentally prepare for what is to come, getting all the jitters out beforehand, which is kind of nice."
The game was certainly an exhilarating start to the new season. Nonetheless, we know we must narrow our focus as we prepare for this weekend. I asked senior Maddie Rolfes on what she believes the team must improve upon heading into regular season matchups.
"Something we need to work on is making our passes more consistent and having them be tape to tape every time. That will help us limit unnecessary turnovers," Rolfes explained. "As a group we've had really good chemistry on and off the ice so far. The underclassmen are doing a great job of holding their own and playing up to the speed of college hockey in the first couple of weeks."
Well said, Maddie! She could not be more correct. This team, as I have mentioned before, is special. On and off the ice, we are a family—a family who spends hours in the gym together, races each other in Mario Kart before practices, forces each other to study for that exam we might not feel like studying for, and pushes each other each day at practice and in games to be the best players and people we can possibly be.
The Badgers host Lindenwood in the first regular-season games Friday night at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. We hope to see you there! You are all a part of our Badger family, too. Thank for you being such amazing supporters!
