Badgers have season-high 23 shots in double overtime thriller

MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin men's soccer picked up a key non-conference win in dramatic fashion on Tuesday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers (5-2-2, 2-1 Big Ten) took down the Raiders (5-4-1, 2-1) in double overtime, 2-1.

Wright State had the first goal in the 67th minute as Zach Burgmeier rebounded a shot back into the UW net. But the Badgers had an answer less than two minutes later. Mike Catalano used a perfect serve from fellow senior Mark Segbers to rocket in his fourth goal of the season and even up the score, 1-1, in the 70th minute.

It was quiet for the rest of regulation play with neither team generating any real opportunities. In fact, the final strike wouldn't come until the second overtime period. Chris Mueller sent a low-liner toward the goal that got deflected in by a Wright State defender.

The Badgers outshot the Raiders 23-8 including eight shots on goal, both marking season highs for Wisconsin. The teams tied 6-6 in corner kicks.

Senior Tom Barlow had a team season-high eight shots in the game while Mueller had the second-most shots by a Badger this season with six.

"They were a very tough opponent. The Wright State coaching staff and their players should be complimented. They came in here and gave us everything we could handle, nothing but compliments to them. The mark of a good, mature team is you can find a way to win after going down; it almost seemed like it got us going. Huge compliments to the guys to come back and get two goals and win the match."

On prepping for Rutgers:
"We're going to take a couple of days off. We've been going at it pretty hard. Most of these guys have been working very hard over the summer to get ready for this season and you can see it. It's not just the physical toll or the little injuries that they're picking up but psychologically. School is starting to really hit and guys that are playing a majority of minutes are going to get two full days off and we won't come back together until Friday to let them get mentally sharp and then we'll start prepping for the Rutgers game."
