Longtime football equipment manager to oversee department
MADISON, Wis. – Mark Peeler, who has spent the last 20 years as Wisconsin's head football equipment manager, has been named UW's Director of Equipment Operations, Associate Athletic Director for Administration Jeff Schmidt announced Tuesday.
Peeler replaces Terry Schlatter, who recently retired after serving as the Badgers' Director of Equipment Operations for the last 20 years.
"We're excited to have Mark lead our equipment operations and continue to provide the great service to our teams and student-athletes that Terry worked so hard to build and establish," Schmidt said.
Peeler started at UW in the spring of 1995 as the assistant football equipment manager before quickly being promoted to head equipment manager in the summer of 1997. In his most recent position, he was responsible for supervising six full-time equipment managers and 15 student employees. Peeler oversaw the entire equipment operation for the football team, including distribution of apparel, locker room oversight, maintaining and reconditioning equipment and packing and transportation of apparel and equipment for road games and bowl games.
In his new role, Peeler will lead, manage, and oversee all operational, financial and personnel activities of the equipment operations for UW Athletics. That includes oversight of the working relationship with the department's shoe and apparel provider and other vendors to effectively address all the equipment needs of the department's 23 athletic programs and 26 support units. He will also direct the creation, implementation and enforcement of equipment room policies and procedures; management and oversight of equipment room budget and purchasing, athletic safety and equipment fitting program, electronic record keeping, physical inventory control and security, laundry services and equipment, and football equipment travel.
Peeler, a 1993 graduate of Western Carolina University, began his career as the head student football equipment manager at WCU. He then spent a season as an undergraduate football intern at North Carolina and a brief time as an equipment intern at Northwestern. After 20 months as an assistant equipment manager at Syracuse, he moved to Madison to begin his career with the Badgers.
