UW opens season at home this weekend
MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's golf team opens the 2017-18 season this weekend by hosting the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course (par 72, 7,259-yards). The 54-hole tournament is scheduled to run from Sunday through Tuesday with the first and second rounds starting on Sunday and Monday, respectively, at 9 a.m. CT. Tuesday's third and final round will be a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. Live stats can be found on BirdieFire.com.
Here's what you need to know heading into this weekend:
1. HISTORY: This is the ninth Badger Invitational, dating back to 2000. UW has hosted this event at University Ridge in each of the past four years and this marks the second-straight year the Badger Invitational has opened the season. Wisconsin won the inaugural event and finished in a tie for fourth place last year.
2. COMPETITION:Â Sixteen teams are competing in this year's Badger Invitational. In addition to Wisconsin, Butler, Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Loyola-Chicago, Marquette, Nebraska, Nevada, Notre Dame, Oakland, Rutgers, South Dakota State, Texas A&M and UAB will be teeing it up at University Ridge.
Iowa State won last year's Badger Invitational by 10 strokes. Nevada (2nd), Illinois State (T4th), Marquette (T4th), Nebraska (7th), Kansas State (8th), South Dakota State (9th), Rutgers (11th) and Butler (13th) all participated last year as well.Â
3. GOING LOW:Â Eleven individuals completed the 54-hole tournament under par last year led by Wofford's Andrew Novak, who won the tournament at 8-under par. Included in that group was current UW senior Eddie Wajda, who tied for eighth at 2-under par.
4. WHO TO WATCH: Wisconsin junior Jordan Hahn and sophomores Pete Kohl and Nick Robinson were recently named among the Big Ten's Golfers to Watch. Read about their summer on the links here. Â Â
5. COURSE: University Ridge has been ranked third in Golfweek's list of the top campus courses in each of the past two years. The course has hosted the PGA Champions Tour American Family Championship in June in each of the last two years.
