Deadlock in Bemidji

No. 1 Badgers and Beavers fight to 3-3 draw before UW takes the shootout

BEMIDJI, Minn. – After defeating Bemidji State 4-3 in overtime on Friday, the No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team battled back to tie Bemidji State, 3-3, on Saturday at the Sanford Center.

Junior Sophia Shaver got the Badgers (23-1-1, 15-0-1-1 WCHA) on the board 11 seconds into the game, launching a shot past BSU (12-3-3, 7-9-2-0 WCHA) netminder Kerigan Dowhy to give UW a 1-0 lead.

However, the Beavers would respond later in the first, scoring off a scrum in front of the net to knot the game at 1-1 heading into the first intermission.

Freshman Caitlin Schneider gave UW a 2-1 lead 32 seconds into the second stanza, tipping a Shaver pass into the BSU net to score her second of the weekend.

However, the Beavers tied things up late in the second while on the power play, ending UW's streak of 23-straight penalties killed.

Early in the third period BSU took its first lead of the series before Sam Cogan tipped in a Natalie Buchbinder pass to tie things up at 3-3 and force overtime.

After a scoreless extra session, the Badgers won the shootout, 2-1, thanks to goals from Maddie Rowe and Brette Pettet.

Straight from the Rink
UW head coach Mark Johnson
On today's game:

"I thought the last two periods we competed as well as we did all weekend. We limited Bemidji State to not many scoring opportunities. The last 40 minutes we got behind the eight ball by giving a goal up but it was a good character builder. If you're down 3-2 how are you going to respond, and I thought we responded really well. We came back to tie it. It was a good hockey game. From a competition level we're going to get stronger because of the six periods this weekend. We found a way to get the extra point in the shootout, so overall a good weekend."

On Sophia Shaver's performance:
"I think her speed is her biggest asset. If you look at the first goal, 10 or 12 seconds into the game, there was a good redirect in the neutral net and she put the puck on net. Her speed and her ability to pressure the puck carriers creates turnovers and give her opportunities so it's nice to see."

Junior forward Sophia Shaver
On the weekend:

"This weekend was a challenging series, and I know our whole team is happy to come out with an overtime win on Friday and a shootout win today against a strong Bemidji team."

On lessons from today:
"I'm really proud of the way we were able to stay composed throughout two close games and I think that says a lot about the character of our team. We learned how to stay positive and encouraging even if a game isn't going our way."

Freshman forward Brette Pettet
On her shootout goal:

"It went past our first three shooters. Our first three were super close, but no matter how many times we practice it, it can go either way. I knew I had to bring the puck to the other side and try something that the other girls didn't do. Luckily it went in five-hole."

On takeaways from the weekend:
"Just to come out and compete off the first faceoff. I think we had a really good second and third period, but I think we could have come out a little stronger at the start. Bemidji State was definitely a good team and you can always expect them to come out and compete hard."
