MADISON, Wis. – After an outstanding showing at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational two weeks ago, the Wisconsin men's cross country team let its younger runners shine at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet on Saturday at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course.Â
Led by a group of underclassmen, Wisconsin finished 13th overall in the "Cardinal" race with 396 total points.

First to cross the line for the Badgers was Coldwater, Michigan native
Shuaib Aljabaly. The true freshman crossed the line of the 8K race in 24 minutes, 37.0 seconds to finish 46th overall in his second race as a Badger, recording a personal best in the process.

Derick Peters was the next Badger to cross the line, earning a PR of 24:42.0.
"We had two young freshmen, Derrick Peters and
Shuaib Aljabaly, who both had a fantastic run," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country
Mick Byrne. "They are going to make our team better."

Seth Hirsch clocked in at 24:55.7 while junior
Andrew Schilling scored fourth for Wisconsin, putting up an 8K performance of 25:06.0.
Teammate
Tannor Wagner rounded out the scoring for the Badgers, cruising through with a time of 25:06.9.

Zack Snider and
Finn Gessner also competed in Saturday's "Cardinal" 8K race. Snider finished with a time of 25:49.1 in his season debut while teammate Gessner finished in 26:11.1.

"A lot of teams ran really hard on this course today," said Byrne. "Hopefully down the road that will play to our advantage, but we'll see. Right now, it is Saturday afternoon and we are going to enjoy the success of these young kids and go have fun with that and enjoy it and look forward to two weeks' time at the Big Ten Championship."

No. 1 Northern Arizona was the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals "Cardinal" race champion, putting up another dominant performance at the Zimmer Championship Course. Led by Tyler Day and Matthew Baxter, the Lumberjacks finished with all its scorers within the top-15 finishers, recording just 41 points to take the win.

Grant Fisher won the "Cardinal" race individual title and led his No. 5 Stanford team to a runner-up finish with 84 points, while No. 11 Colorado took third in the "Cardinal" race with 110 points.

Rounding out the top-five finishers in the men's "Cardinal" race were No. 13 Oregon who took fourth, tallying 152 points, and Wyoming, who finished fifth overall with 191 points.
In the white race, No. 2 BYU scored 29 points to win the title while BYU's Rory Linkletter took home the individual title in 23:54.3.

Wisconsin will travel to Lincoln, Nebraska for the 2018 Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Oct. 28. Hosted by the University of Nebraska, this year's Big Ten championship will take place at the Mahoney Golf Course and is scheduled to begin with the women's 6K race at 10:45 a.m. (CT). The meet will be streamed live by FloTrack.
