Goalkeeper named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after two big shutouts
MADISON, Wis. – Two shutouts. An upset over an undefeated top-five Michigan State team. Seven saves and 187 minutes. The resume speaks for itself for Wisconsin men's soccer junior Dean Cowdroy, who was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday.
Cowdroy, now famously dubbed as "The Cowboy" by Big Ten Network announcers, absolutely dominated the net in both of the Badgers' contests last week.
The junior first started his campaign on Wednesday against Marquette where he faced nine shots and put two brilliant saves on the scoreboard to keep the game at 0-0 and to allow Wisconsin to finally breakthrough for the 1-0 victory. Â
A few days later, Cowdroy faced a scary Spartan attack and completely shut them out. The Australian put five saves on the board in 97 minutes of action and saw 10 shots. Three of his saves were at pivotal moments in the match. His shutout allowed the Badgers to get the game-winning goal in the 97th minute and complete the shocking upset over No. 5 Michigan State, 1-0. UW handed the Spartans their first loss of the season and their second shutout of the season. Cowdroy's five saves in the match were the second-highest of his career as a Badger.
