Freshman tallies five points in 4-2 win over Rutgers
Â
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin (6-4, 3-1 Big Ten) continued its dominant trend in conference play against Rutgers (2-8-1, 1-4 Big Ten) on Sunday afternoon at the McClimon Complex. The Badgers weren't hesitant in delivering a crushing victory to the Scarlet Knights winning 4-2.
The first career start for freshman Noah Melick was certainly one he will remember. The young Badger was dominant throughout the match, tallying five total points in a convincing performance at the forward position.Â
His first strike came in the 28th minute of the match. Melick scored on a hustle play that led him to disarm the Rutger player with the ball, only to turn and shoot a laser that landed neatly tucked in the right-hand corner of the Scarlet Knights' net. His second one came off beautiful teamwork by junior Duncan Storey and freshman Andrew Akindele that Melick finished for his second goal of the match.
But the freshman wasn't done participating in Wisconsin's scoring plays, delivering an absolute dime-ball to Akindele, who sent the ball to the left side of the Rutgers net to end his day with a goal and an assist.
Junior Robin Olofsson scored the first goal of the match and the first goal of his career in Cardinal and White. He was assisted by sophomore Patrick Yim and junior Mitch Guitar.
Straight from the pitch:
Head coach John Trask
"On a day like today, obviously conditions play a part. Sometimes it's just about getting the ball down the field and we did that. We knew it was going to be an absolute battle, but the guys listened to the message and it paid off.Â
"Our captain, Noah Leibold, you heard his voice, you saw what he did – he is one of the best players we have. I don't talk about him often, but I wouldn't trade him for anyone in the conference."
Up Next: Wisconsin welcomes Green Bay to McClimon on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. (CT) for the final derby match of the season.
