Latest NCAA report shows 90 percent GSR for Badgers student-athletes
MADISON, Wis. – University of Wisconsin student-athletes achieved a 90 percent Graduation Success Rate (GSR) according to the NCAA's latest report that was released on Wednesday. That figure, which applies to student-athletes who entered school beginning in 2011, is the best for the Badgers since the NCAA implemented the GSR in 1998.
This latest report adds to what has already been a record-breaking year for UW Athletics in the classroom. Following the Spring 2018 semester, UW student-athletes achieved the highest-ever cumulative GPA (3.117), highest-ever term GPA (3.148), and highest-ever number of student-athletes named to the Dean's, Dean's Honor and Dean's High Honor List (349) in a single year. A record number of Badgers (293) also earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2017-18 and a record 15 sports earned a perfect 1000 Academic Progress Rate (APR).
"We are extremely proud of our student-athletes and what they've accomplished in balancing success in the classroom and success in competition," UW Director of Athletics Barry Alvarez said. "Our coaches work hard to recruit student-athletes who are committed to competing at the highest levels in both areas. In addition, we pride ourselves on providing the resources to help our student-athletes achieve these record levels in this demanding academic environment."
Seven UW programs achieved a 100 percent GSR for the latest reporting period, including women's basketball, men's golf, women's golf, women's hockey, women's swimming, women's tennis and volleyball. In addition, five other sports (men's basketball, men's soccer, women's cross country/track, women's rowing and women's soccer) achieved a GSR of 90 percent or higher.
The latest overall Graduation Success Rate for Division I FBS schools is 87 percent. Fourteen of the Badgers' 19 measured sports achieved a higher GSR than the FBS average in that sport.
The NCAA developed the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) to more accurately assess the long-term academic success of student-athletes. The rate holds institutions accountable for transfer students, unlike the federal graduation rate. The GSR also accounts for midyear enrollees and is calculated for every sport. Under the calculation, institutions are not penalized for outgoing transfer students who leave in good academic standing. The outgoing transfers are included in the receiving institution's GSR class. The GSR allows student-athletes six years to earn their degree.
