Callie at the Catch: Recovery is key
February 16, 2018 | Women's Rowing
Plenty of resources to stay healthy throughout the year
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- February 14 marks the half way point of February, which also means we are over the hump of winter. It is all downhill from here.Â
But this time of the year, where we are inside training as hard as we can everyday while sickness roams around campus, recovery is our best friend and essential to our success and staying healthy. As student-athletes at Wisconsin, recovery is made easy.
For us rowers who get to spend a lot of time at Porter Boathouse, it is not only a place for rowing, erging and weightlifting, it is also a great place for recovering. We have an athletic training room, a nutrition snack room and a lot of equipment to aid in recovering from hard workouts. And let's not act like it is not one of the most beautiful buildings on campus.
The other athletic facilities on campus also provide all student-athletes with big ice baths, warm baths, saunas, steam rooms, underwater treadmills and everything you could ever think of in the training room. Of course, all equipment is used with guidance of our professional athletic trainers to ensure correct utilization and safety. And I assure you I have missed a ton.
Another type of recovery we make sure to stay on top of is nutrition and Wisconsin does not stop short on providing help in this as well. Brand new this year is our Jack Link's nutrition center, bigger and more extravagant than before, which provides all sorts of recovery snacks, drinks, smoothies and everything in between, also with the guidance from our professional nutritionists.
Wisconsin knows the importance of recovery and all of us student-athletes take advantage of the resources given because we know the importance it has on our success and performance.
This will be especially important this weekend when we travel. Yes, that is right, we are given a little treat this year, a trip to a body of water that is rowable! We are heading to Seattle this weekend to row in a boat, on liquid water, where there will be no ergs. Excited is an understatement and this only means that season is coming.
