Callie at the Catch: The other UW
February 22, 2018 | Women's Rowing
Badgers used a weekend in Seattle to test out how their winter training has helped them grow
Whitewater, Wisconsin, native Callie Herbert is back and giving regular updates again this year from Porter Boathouse and wherever else rowing takes her and her teammates. A four-time swimming state qualifier in high school, the senior stroked the varsity eight to 11th-place at the 2017 NCAA Championships.
MADISON, Wis. -- The Badgers, or in terms of Husky fans we met, "the other UW," made way to the University of Washington's homeland and water in Seattle for a weekend get away to take what we have been learning and proving on the ergs and bring them into boats. And let me tell you, we are doing things right.
Â
We were fortunate and beyond grateful for the opportunity to row out of Pocock Rowing Center and borrow boats, oars and launches. Could you imagine trying to drive a trailer with boats on it through the mountains in the winter? Yeah, me neither.
Â
While on the water we got to see the Space Needle, downtown Seattle, the Husky Stadium and Boathouse, and we rowed to the locks, which lead out to the ocean. But what was even more impressive was being a part of the rich history of rowing all in one place as we rowed in 'the cut' and passed the original boathouse written about in the book, Boys in the Boat. If you do not know either of these I would highly suggest checking it out because I could not do it justice.
Â
At the end of the year, we have three extremely meaningful awards named after three unbelievably respected Badger athletes whom we appreciate everything they had done for Wisconsin rowing. While in Seattle, we were able to meet the woman behind the Simonds Award, Emily Simonds, and we could not be more honored to have her on our launch.
Â
As the trip came to a close, we stopped at Pike Place Market for some lunch and fun. The gum wall was oddly beautiful, we saw the first ever Starbucks, and senior Maren Schultz caught a fish! (not a crab).
Â
Throughout the weekend, we learned there are Badger fans everywhere, even in Husky nation as people kept passing us and yelling Go Badgers!
Â
It was a great weekend getaway, but now we are back in Madison to continue what we do on the ergs!
