Badgers compete in Mexico
MADISON, Wis. —  The Wisconsin women's golf team will leave the country for its third event this spring, competing at the Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational, Friday and Saturday, March 16-17, at the El Tigre Golf Club in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
Here are five things to know before the invitational:
1. Last time out:  The Badgers finished the 54-hole Westbrook Invitational with a 20-under par score of 844. That mark set a school record and was 11 strokes better than the previous 54-hole record of 855, set at the Minnesota Invitational less than six months ago.
2. Over the border: UW travels across the southern border for the second straight season. Last year, the Badgers battled to a third place finish at the 2017 Hawkeye-El Tigre Invitational. Weather is predicted to be in the low 80's throughout the weekend.
3. The Fantastic Five: The Badgers will travel the record-breaking starting five lineup of seniors Gabby Curtis, Lexi Harkins, Aya Johnson, Becky Klongland, and junior Jessica Reinecke to Mexico this coming weekend. That group has played in every match of the 2017-18 season together. Junior Nat Zeng will play as an individual.Â
4. Eye of the Tiger:  The Badgers will face elite competition in Mexico. They take on Iowa, No. 16 Arizona, New Mexico, No. 14 Washington, No. 45 San Diego State, Idaho, Indiana, No. 46 Kennesaw State, Grand Canyon, Chattanooga, and New Mexico State.
5. Thoughts from Coach Oehrlein:Â
"We were very sharp at Westbrook and we are all anxious to get back into a tournament."Â
"We took a huge step forward in Arizona, playing the par 5's exceptional in rounds 2 and 3. We'll need to continue to build on that as there are opportunities on this golf course that we'll need to take advantage of."
"We've focused a lot on our long irons, hybrids, and targeting in the past week in hopes that we'll play the par 3's more consistently. Â It will be an important scoring statistic heading into this week."
