Denis’ bid derailed by technical issue
POZNAN, Poland – Senior Niamh Martin and junior lightweight rower Grace Joyce wrapped up their experiences at the 2018 World Rowing Under 23 Championships on Sunday, racing in the B and A Finals of their respective events.
Racing in the women's straight four, Martin, a Seattle native, clocked a time of 6:47.730 with her crew to place fourth in the B Final and finish 10th overall at the event.
Russia won the straight four in a time of 6:31.490.
Her boat started out the event with a fourth-place finish in its heat on Thursday, before finishing with a similar result in its repechage heat the next day.
For Joyce, a Northfield, Illinois, native, her women's lightweight quadruple sculls rowed to a time of 7:12.070 over 2000 meters to place sixth in the A Final. Italy won the gold medal in 6:54.850.
The boat reached the A Final after placing third during last Wednesday's heat, then taking third in last Saturday's repechage.
Recent graduate Agathe Denis, from Austin, Texas, was scheduled to compete for France in the women's lightweight single sculls, but was forced to withdraw from the event due to a technical issue.
