Trio will lead Badgers in 2018
MADISON, Wis. – Head coach Kelly Sheffield has announced that Tiffany Clark, M.E. Dodge and Sydney Hilley will serve as captains of the 2018 Wisconsin volleyball team.
"I'm pleased to announce that Sydney, Tiffany, and M.E. will be our team captains this year," Sheffield said. "Each of them are highly competitive, put the team's needs ahead of their own, and are servant leaders. They are also leaders off the court with how they conduct their lives as well as the emphasis they put into their academics."
Clark, a junior from Naperville, Illinois, played in 24 matches as the Badgers' libero last season. She averaged a team-best 3.88 digs per set, which ranked sixth in the Big Ten Conference. The 5-10 Clark recorded 10-or-more digs in 19 matches and had 20-plus digs in five matches, including a career-high 25 saves vs. Michigan State. Â
"Tiffany inspires others with her intensity and fiery energy," Sheffield said. "She's a 'let's get it done' type of player who is always training on her competitive edge. She will do anything to win at the highest level."
In 2017, Dodge ranked third on the team with 2.21 digs per set. The East Troy, Wisconsin, native recorded double-figure digs in 11 matches, including a career high 21 vs. Marquette. The defensive specialist/libero earned Academic All-Big Ten honors as a sophomore, and recorded the first two services of her career last season.
"M.E.'s 'we got this' spirit and attitude is something that really inspires her teammates and coaches," said Sheffield. "Her optimism in challenging situations and her unbridled enthusiasm for life are big driving forces for this team."
Hilley earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman in 2017, ranking seventh nationally and second in the Big Ten with 11.76 assists per set. The 6-0 setter led the Badgers with nine double-doubles on the year, recording double-figure digs in nine matches. Hilley, a native of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, also averaged 2.02 digs, 0.66 kills and 0.64 blocks per set last season.
"Syd is a mature leader in every aspect of her life, not just the time she's in the gym," explained Sheffield. "The rest of the team has a high level of trust in her and so do I. Her passion for the game is as high as any player I've ever coached. She's a 'come with me' teammate who does a great job of balancing a calming demeanor with an incredible sense of urgency."
The Badgers open preseason practice on Aug. 8. Wisconsin hosts its annual Red vs. White Scrimmage on Aug. 18 at 1 p.m. in the UW Field House. The season opener is on Aug. 24-25 at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in Minneapolis.
