MADISON, Wis. -- Rowing is a tradition at Wisconsin. The rowing program is the oldest UW sport, dating all the way back to the 1800's. A major part of that tradition includes walk-ons.
Walk-on's at Wisconsin have competed in NCAA Championships, World Championships and the Olympics.
Of the Badger's 17 women's rowing Olympians, 16 were walk-ons. Grace Latz and Vicky Opitz made the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team after walking on at Wisconsin.
Men's Rowing Assistant Coach, Beau Hoopman, is a former rowing walk-on at the University of Wisconsin. Hoopman became a gold medalist and set a world record in the 2004 Olympics. A total of 14 men's rowers have competed at the Olympics.
Rowing is great for high school athletes who still want to compete at a Division I level. Talent from other sports (such as basketball, swimming, running, golf, volleyball, football, and soccer) transfers into the skills needed to be a Division I athlete.
Besides still participating in a team sport and the potential for success, walking-on at Wisconsin opens doors for new friendships. Rowers must be in sync on the water and teamwork is cultivated through socialization.
Become a part of Wisconsin's longest tradition and walk-on to the rowing team!
