Badgers named conference athletes of the year
MADISON, Wis. – Wisconsin track and field standouts Morgan McDonald and Alicia Monson were named the Big Ten Track Athletes of the Year, the conference announced on Tuesday.
This is the second time this season that the pair of distance runners swept the conference awards, after doing so during the 2018 cross country season. This is the first time a pair of Wisconsin track athletes have earned the dual honors since 1997, when Reggie Torian and Kathy Butler did it.
After redshirting the 2018 indoor track season, McDonald came back to track with a bang this year. McDonald became the first Badger to sweep the 3000 and 5000 meters at the NCAA indoor championships as he scored 20 points to lead UW to a fourth-place showing, the team's highest finish since 2013.
McDonald, the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Champion, set the school record in the 3000 meters after a mark of 7 minutes, 42.76 seconds at the Millrose Games. He also won the 5000 meters at the 2019 Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Monson became the first Badger to win the women's 5K at the NCAA indoor championships, crossing the line in 15:31.26. She also earned second-team All-America honors in the 3000 meters.
The Amery, Wisconsin native was named the Big Ten Track Athlete of the Championships after winning the 3000 and 5000 meters at the indoor conference meet. She also broke the school record for the 3000 meters at the Millrose Games with a time of 8:45.97.
