UW nets its highest finish since 2012-13 season
MADISON, Wis. – Thanks to a pair of top-10 finishes at national championships, the Wisconsin men's track and field team finished third in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Men's Program of the Year standings, the organization announced Wednesday.
It marks UW's best finish since the 2012-13 finish when the Badgers finished runner-up as UW finished behind Stanford and Oregon. UW is also the only Big Ten Conference school to have multiple top-three finishes in award history.
Wisconsin finished eighth at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships at the Zimmer Championship Course as Morgan McDonald won the individual title to lead UW at home.
At the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Wisconsin finished fourth as a program as McDonald won two NCAA titles while Olli Hoare, Trent Nytes and the Badgers' distance medley relay squad earned first-team All-America honors.
McDonald also led UW at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships as he won the 5000 meters, while Hoare and Nytes also scored to lead UW to an 18th-place finish.
UW was also one of only two Big Ten schools to be ranked on the men's side as the honor recognizes the nation's best all-around programs based on their finishes at the three NCAA championship events throughout the year.
The Badgers were also the top-ranked Big Ten team in the women's rankings as UW finished No. 14 in part to a 10th-place finish at the 2018 NCAA Cross Country Championships. Alicia Monson won the 5000 meters at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships to lead UW to a 21st place finish. Amy Davis also scored for UW at the NCAA outdoor meet in the 10,000 meters.
