House of Roque: Senior tallies hat trick in Border Battle triumph

No. 1 Wisconsin battles No. 2 Minnesota for a 5-4 OT win

MADISON, Wis. – A pair of stars shined at LaBahn Arena on Friday night for the top-ranked Wisconsin women's hockey team as Abby Roque netted her second-career hat trick while Sophie Shirley netted the overtime game-winning goal to lead the Badgers to a 5-4 win over No. 2 Minnesota.

Roque put the Badgers (22-2-1, 12-2-1-0 WCHA) on the board for an early lead over the Golden Gophers (20-3-3, 12-3-2-1 WCHA) with a wrap-around goal off sophomore Britta Curl's rebound just three minutes into the first.

Minnesota tied it up with 11 minutes to go in the second, but that didn't last as junior Caitlin Schneider sniped the top left shelf of Gophers' goalie Sydney Scobee on a breakaway two minutes later with a pass by junior Delaney Drake.

Still in the second, Roque nailed another rebound from senior Presley Norby with a-top shelf backhander with 2:18 to go.

Less than two minutes later, Roque completed the hat trick with a goal thanks to an assist from senior Alexis Mauermann's shot to cap off her first hat trick of the year and UW's second of the 2019-20 season.

The Gophers made up ground quickly in the third finding the backdoor at the 13:51 mark and followed up with another goal four minutes later.

Minnesota hit the net once more to tie the game back up at 4-4 with just 5:06 on the clock sending the rematch into overtime.

In the suspenseful first 52 seconds of play, sophomore Sophie Shirley nailed the game-winning overtime goal with a one-timer from junior Daryl Watts.

Senior netminder Kristen Campbell tallied 21 saves and improved to an 21-2-1 this season.

Three notes of the game:
  • This was Abby Roque's second career hat trick and 50th career goal. She is only the second Badger to have a hat trick against Minnesota as Sarah Nurse (2013-17) tallied one Dec. 4, 2016 in a thrilling 8-2 win.
  • Now holding 157 points, Abby Roque moved into 10th in program history for most points.
  • Sophie Shirley has scored in three-straight games and has a team high of 22 this season.

Straight from the Rink:
UW Head Coach Mark Johnson
On the game:

"I told the team that every game you learn something about yourself, and you move forward. We're playing against a good opponent and momentum is a funny thing. In the third, they got it, and we couldn't get it back. Going into overtime -- and you talk about any shot is a good shot. We were able to win the face off and put in a good goal. This is an opportunity to learn and focus on some details and be better tomorrow.

On Abby Roque's hat-trick:
"She earned her chances and earned her goals, and it was exciting to see.

Advice to the team moving forward:
"After tonight, there are nine games to play. What do we want to do? We don't want to have any regrets after these nine games. You guys are in shape. You know how to play. So, let's go out and have some fun and really go after it."

Junior Caitlin Schneider
On the game:

"I think either way it's a big win regardless if we win by three goals or one goal. There's lots to take away. We're halfway at this point, but there's a lot of progress to go, so I think it's just one day at a time, one week at a time. But I think we made big strides tonight.

On her goal:
"Fortunate enough, the puck popped out to my teammate Delaney Drake, and I was just skating up the ice and calling for the puck. Next thing I know, I got a cleared a shot at the net so it was like okay, here I go. So yeah, it was pretty exciting.

On Saturday's game:
"They're going to play a full 60 minutes, they're a top two mean in the country so you gotta bring everything all the time. There's no laying back because the other team will take advantage of you."

Senior Abby Roque
On the game:

"We were matched up against some of their top players there: (Grace) Zumwinkle, (Taylor) Heise, (Sarah) Potomak. Zumwinkle and Heise are really strong and physical players, and I think playing against them we have to be physical and come out playing physical. And our line is good at that, and I think that's kind of worked for our advantage.

We had some defensive breakdowns in the third we can't let happen when we're up by three goals. Myself, I was up there for three of the four goals, and my line and my teammates need to make sure that's not happening."

On her hat trick:
"I was here when Sarah Nurse did it (recorded a hat trick against Minnesota) before me, and she's one of my good friends, somebody I look up to, and I'm really glad that she's the one who did it before me. I think that's incredible that we are the two who have done it. It's a great accomplishment, they're a great team and they're hard to score on.
