Both have standout weekend at Ohio State
MADISON, Wis. — A pair of Wisconsin women's hockey players earned WCHA accolades on Tuesday as junior Sophie Shirley was honored as the WCHA Forward of the Week, while fellow junior Nicole LaMantia was named the WCHA Defenseman of the Week.
Both had impressive weekends at Ohio State for the season opener and were instrumental in UW's 5-0 win over the No. 4 Buckeyes on Saturday.Â
Shirley had a big weekend as she collected her 50th career goal and her 100th career point during the road series. Friday night the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, native posted her 100th career point off an assist, making her one of only 27 Badgers to do so. She reached 50 career goals with her first tally on Saturday to become one of 18 Badgers to reach this milestone in program history. Her two goals were tied for the most by a WCHA skater during the weekend.Â
After posting an assist on Friday, LaMantia tied a career-high with three assists on Saturday while also posting an impressive +4 plus/minus rating on the blueline. Her four points and four assists paced the WCHA and NCAA, while her +4 plus/minus rating for the weekend also led the league.Â
No. 1 Wisconsin heads north for a Border Battle showdown with No. 3 Minnesota this weekend at Ridder Arena. Puck drop on Friday is at 6 p.m. while Saturday's game begins at 4 p.m. Both games can be seen live on Big Ten Network+.Â
