October 19, 2021 | Women's Soccer
UW faces Ohio State on Wednesday night before hosting Iowa on Senior Day on Sunday
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team returns to Madison for their final two Big Ten Conference regular-season matches this weekend. The Badgers face Ohio State on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. contest at the McClimon Soccer Complex that will air live on ESPNU. UW wraps up the regular-season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. game against Iowa at home that will serve as Senior Day for the squad.
Both games at the McClimon Soccer Complex will feature free admission. Wednesday is International Student Night while Sunday will be the Badgers' Senior Day as UW will recognize Jordyn Bloomer, Maia Cella, Cammie Murtha, Lauren Rice, Lily Rawnsley and Natalie Viggiano prior to kickoff.
1. LAST TIME OUT: UW is coming off of a split last week as the Badgers earned a thrilling 1-0 overtime win on Thursday night at McClimon as Natalie Viggiano scored 23 seconds into OT to give UW a win over Northwestern. The Badgers suffered their first road loss of the season on Sunday, falling 1-0 at Nebraska.
2. BIG TEN IMPLICATIONS: UW enters the final weekend of the regular season sitting in ninth place as it looks to earn a top-eight finish to qualify for the 2021 Big Ten Women's Soccer Tournament. The Badgers have 11 points through eight league games, while Ohio State is tied for 10th with 10 points. UW's opponent on Sunday, Iowa, has 12 points and is tied for fifth place. Only four points separate the third-place team (Michigan) and the 10th-place teams (Ohio State and Northwestern).
3. STANDOUT SENIORS: This year's senior class will go down as one of the top ones in program history. Bloomer and Cella have each earned All-America and first-team All-Big Ten honors in their careers while Rice and Murtha have both earned third-team conference honors during their careers here. The group helped UW reach three NCAA tournaments and win the 2019 Big Ten regular-season title thanks to an undefeated run in league play.
4. READY FOR SOME HOME COOKING: The Badgers improved to 49-10-13 at the McClimon Soccer Complex since the start of the 2014 season thanks to their 1-0 win against Northwestern last Thursday. UW has stellar records in Madison against both teams, holding a 9-3-3 record against the Buckeyes in Madison and a 6-2-2 record against Iowa at home.
5. AGAINST THE OPPONENTS: UW is 11-11-7 all time against Ohio State. The Badgers earned a 2-1 home win against the Buckeyes in their regular-season finale in 2019 to cap off an undefeated run in Big Ten Conference play thanks to goals from Cammie Murtha and Dani Rhodes. Last year UW suffered a 3-1 setback in Columbus as Claire Odmark had the lone goal for UW.
UW is 13-6-4 against the Hawkeyes and split its two meetings with Iowa last spring. UW earned a 1-0 win against Iowa in its first game of the spring schedule thanks to a Claire Odmark goal while UW fell in to Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game, 1-0, to conclude the season.
