Viggiano, McConnell, Monticello and Green all collect conference honors
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer quartet of senior Natalie Viggiano, junior Macy Monticello, sophomore Gabby Green and freshman Aidan McConnell all earned Big Ten Conference year-end honors, the league announced on Thursday.
Viggiano collected second-team All-Big Ten accolades, McConnell and Monticello were named third-team All-Big Ten and Green received Big Ten Sportsmanship honors. In addition, McConnell was also named to the All-Big Ten Freshmen Team.
A native of Troy, Michigan, Viggiano has started in all 18 matches for UW this season after missing the entire 2020-21 season due to injury. The midfielder ranks second on the team this year with five goals, three of which were game-winning efforts, including an unforgettable overtime winner against Northwestern.
McConnell also started in all 18 matches for UW at centerback, and was a consistent presence for UW's backline that had nine shutouts this season and allowed only 0.72 goals per game. The Dexter, Michigan, native is the first Badger rookie to earn All-Big Ten honors as a freshman since Victoria Pickett did so during her rookie season in 2015.
A native of Arlington, Virginia, Monticello earns her second Big Ten accolade as the defender was named to the All-Big Ten Freshmen Team back in 2019. She also started all 18 games for UW and has started every single game for the Badgers during her three years in Madison.
Green was named UW's honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the student-athletes picked are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They also must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the competition setting. A native of Austin, Texas, Green started in 12 games for UW, including all 10 of the Badgers' conference games.
The Badgers open postseason play on Sunday with a Big Ten quarterfinal game against Rutgers. Kickoff in New Jersey is set for 2:30 p.m. and fans can watch the game live on B1G+.
