UW heads to Champaign to take on the Fighting Illini
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team heads south this weekend to take on Illinois on Friday night in Champaign, Illinois. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. and fans can watch the game on B1G+.
1. LAST TIME OUT: UW is coming off of a pair of hard-fought games at home against Penn State and Purdue. Against the Nittany Lions, Emma Jaskaniec scored her seventh of the season early in the first half, but PSU scored late in the first and second half to take a 2-1 win. On Sunday, the Boilermakers went up 2-0 before Natalie Viggiano scored but UW was unable to force overtime and dropped a 2-1 match to Purdue.
2. CELLA IS CLASS: Maia Cella was named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award last weekend, marking the second-straight year the UW midfielder has been up for the prestigious award. A two-time first-team All-Big Ten selection, Cella has started every game for UW this year and led the team last year in assists. The senior CLASS Award, an acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, encourages athletes to stay committed to their academics and give back to their communities. In order to be eligible for the award, seniors or graduate students must excel in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.
3. IN THE RPI: The Badgers have played a tough schedule this year and have been rewarded for it with a No. 19 ranking in this week's RPI rankings. The Badgers have a 7-3-3 record and are undefeated away from Madison with a 5-0-2 ledger. UW is one of four Big Ten teams in the top-25 of the RPI and are joined by Michigan (No. 6), Rutgers (No. 10 and Purdue (No. 22).
4. EMMA KEEPS SCORING: Junior midfield Emma Jaskaniec has enjoyed a stellar season for UW this year as she leads the team in goals this year with seven. She ranks third in the Big Ten in goals with seven while she ranks sixth in the conference in points, averaging 1.31 points per game. It marks the second-straight year that Jaskaniec is leading the team in goals.
5. AGAINST THE OPPONENTS: UW enters the weekend with an eight-game unbeaten run against Illinois with a 6-0-2 record since the 2014 season. Last season, the Badgers earned a 1-0 win against Illinois in a home game in Loves Park, Illinois as Emma Jaskaniec scored the game-winning goal early in the first half.
