Power-play goals lift Badgers over Spartans, 3-2
MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team (8-13-3, 5-8-1 1-1-0 Big Ten) battled back to take down the Spartans, 3-2, on Saturday at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers and Spartans (11-12-1, 5-8-0 Big Ten) skated to 30 scoreless minutes to start the match before MSU's Adam Goodsir put his team up 1-0 midway through the second period. Goodsir got control of the puck behind the net and scored on a wrap-around deflection play assisted by David Gucciardi and Aiden Gallacher.
Max Johnson evened the score for the Badgers less than a minute later, netting his fourth goal of the season when Liam Malmquist fed him a stretch pass that led to a breakaway in the Spartans' zone. Dominick Mersch collected the secondary assist on the play.
Cole Krygier gave MSU a 2-1 lead heading into the third period when he scored on a rebound at 4:39 in the second. Jesse Tucker won the faceoff back to Erik Middendorf, who fired a shot on net for Krygier to tap in the rebound.Â
The Badgers went on a five-minute power-play after MSU received a major penalty for head contact.
Brock Caufield took the opportunity to tie the game, 2-2, with the first power-play goal. Tarek Baker, from behind the net, passed to Carson Bantle on the point, who set up Caufield with a one-timer that he drove into the back of the net.
Wisconsin was determined to make the most of the extended power play.
Mathieu De St. Phalle scored on the man-advantage at 10:56 to put the Badgers ahead 3-2. Baker completed a drop pass to Bantle as he skated over the blue line. Bantle worked his way into the slot where he passed the puck off to De St. Phalle, who created enough space to fire a wrist shot past the Spartan goaltender.
The Badgers held onto their lead to defeat the Spartans and completed a sweep of the series. Wisconsin also surpassed MSU for fifth place in the Big Ten standings.
