Badgers' comeback falls short in Holiday Face-Off championship

Cruz Lucius nets lone UW goal against Clarkson

MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team came up short against Clarkson in the 2022 Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off at Fiserv Forum on Thursday.

The Badgers set out to defend their title as Holiday Face Off Champions after winning the inaugural tournament in 2021.

The Clarkson Golden Knights (9-8-2) took a one-goal lead at 8:38 in the first period when Chris Klack scored unassisted from the slot.

A pair of penalties left the Badgers shorthanded in the second period when Ben Dexheimer received a minor penalty for interference and Luke LaMaster got a five-minute major for checking to the head a minute later.

Clarkson took advantage on the five-on-three on a one-timer from Anthony Romano to make it 2-0.

The Badgers (8-12-0) got on the board late in the second period when Cruz Lucius jammed in a loose puck on a 2-on-1 with Brock Caufield.

Wisconsin headed into the final period trailing Clarkson, 2-1.

Despite notching 10 shots in the final set, the Badgers couldn't even the score.

Wisconsin pulled goaltender Jared Moe for an extra attacker with under two minutes remaining, but it was Clarkson's Erik Bargholtz who scored an empty-net goal with 5.1 seconds remaining to seal the 3-1 win and claim the 2022 Kwik Trip Holiday Face-Off Championship.

  • Wisconsin posted 30 shots on goal
  • Brock Caufield tallied an assist and has four points in his last three games
