NEWARK, N.J. - No. 12 Wisconsin picked up two victories on Sundat against Ivy League opponents at the 2022 Garden State Grapple in Newark.
Held at the Prudential Center, home of the NHL's New Jersey Devils, the Big Ten vs. EIWA event saw Wisconsin earn a dominant upset victory of No. 12 Princeton, 38-3, before Wisconsin defeated Penn, 26-9.
Sophomore Braxton Amos (197 pounds) earned the Spartan Combat Most Outstanding Wrestler award representing Big Ten teams for his two victories on the day. He earned a 3-2 overtime victory to upset No. 19 Luke Stout from Princeton and a 9-1 major decision over Penn's No. 27 Cole Urbas.
Several fellow Badgers were also undefeated on Sunday. Austin Gomez (149) collected a pin in 4:36 over Princeton's Rocco Camillaci and a 9-4 decision over Penn's No. 9 Doug Zapf.
New Jersey guy Joseph Zargo earned two wins, including a 14-4 major decision against Princeton's Danny Coles. Dean Hamiti picked up two bonus-point victories with a 13-5 major decision over Princeton's Blaine Bergey and a 19-4 technical fall over Penn's Adam Thomson.
Tyler Dow earned two decisions at 184 pounds, riding out Penn's John Stout in the third period to clinch a narrow 3-2 victory to go undefeated on the day. Heavyweight Trent Hillger earned victories over his two ranked opponents, including a 10-1 major decision.
Wisconsin returns home next Sunday, Dec. 11 to host the Wisconsin Wrestling Showcase featuring Division I, II and III duals. Wisconsin will wrestle Drexel and all matches start at 1 p.m. in the UW Field House.
