Stramel nets fourth goal of the season
MINNEAPOLIS — The Wisconsin men's hockey team was unsuccessful in their first series matchup against the No. 3 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
The Gophers (14-5-0 9-2-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) took an early lead four minutes into the game. Jimmy Snuggerud rushed the puck up the ice and passed to Matthew Knies coming into the Badger's zone. He found Logan Cooley on the wing, who slipped the puck in the net backhand past goaltender Jared Moe.
The Gophers jumped to 2-0 at 7:23 in the first period when Jaxon Nelson scored on a slap shot set up by Bryce Brodzinski and Jackson LaCombe.
Charlie Stramel got the Badgers (7-10-0 1-8-0 0-0-0 Big Ten) on the board with a power-play goal at 9:28 in the first period. After Cruz Lucius forced a turnover in the Gophers' zone, Jack Gorniak got possession of the puck and passed back to Lucius in the slot. He then set up Stramel for a one-timer shot that he hammered into the net.
The Gophers added two more goals to their tally before the period was over.
Bryce Brodzinski scored from the point on the power play and Cooley netted his second goal of the game on a breakaway at 18:31 in the first period after a Badger turnover on an odd-man rush.
Minnesota took a 5-1 lead four minutes into the second period. Rhett Pittlick scored on a low angle shot assisted by Cal Thomas.
Goaltender Kyle McClellan then entered the game for Wisconsin.
Ryan Chelsey scored at 9:12 in the second on a one-timer from the slot, assisted by Cooley and Knies.
Aaron Huglen scored unassisted on a breakaway at 8:48 in the third period for a final score of 7-1.
