Laatsch nets first career goal in Big Ten tournament loss
SOUTH BEND, Ind. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team's season came to a close on Sunday at Compton Family Ice Arena when the Badgers dropped a 4-2 game to No. 7 Notre Dame in the final game of their best-of-three series in the Big Ten tournament.
With Wisconsin claiming the first game of the series and Notre Dame (27-10-0) coming up with a win in game two, it was all on the line tonight.
Notre Dame's Jack Adams provides his team with a 1-0 lead at 11:22 in the first period when he buried the puck from the goal line on a no-look feed from Hunter Strand and Nick Leivermann.
Landon Slaaggert then doubled Notre Dame's lead on the power-play, finishing on a play from Graham Slaggert and Trevor Janicke.
Wisconsin got their first tally of the game when Sam Stange buried a wrist shot top shelf at 16:01 in the first period. Jack Gorniak fed the puck up the boards in the offensive zone to Liam Malmquist who centered a pass to Stange in the slot, cutting Notre Dame's lead in half.
The Fighting Irish regained their two goal lead 1:55 into the second period with a goal from Jake Pivonka. Adam Karashik sent the puck deep in the Badgers' zone off the face-off for Jesse Lansdell to cycle to Pivonka in the slot where he lined up a shot and buried the puck in the net.
The sixth-seeded Badgers continued to battle at third-seeded Notre Dame, as it did all weekend in the hard-fought matchup.
Freshman defenseman Daniel Laatsch scored his first goal as a Badger late in the second period to cut the deficit to 3-2 heading into the final stretch. Laatsch fired a shot through traffic from inside the blue line, assisted by Roman Ahcan and Dominick Mersch.
The Badgers brought a tenacious effort in the third period but were unable to notch an equalizing goal.
The Fighting Irish took advantage of the Badgers' empty net in the final minutes to claim the game, 4-2, and bring Wisconsin's 2021-22 hockey season to a close.
The Badgers, who finished in a tie for fifth place in the Big Ten during the regular season, ended their season with a record of 10-24-3.
