BOSTON - The No.12 Wisconsin men's rowing team had their second day of races on the East Coast as they took on No.8 Northeastern on Sunday morning. The Badgers grabbed a victory in the second varsity eight to lead the charge.
The varsity eight started the morning off for the Badgers, finishing through the line in 5 minutes, 56.1 seconds. The Huskies edged the Badgers, finishing in 5:51.5.
The second varsity eight was able to hold the lead the entire race, opening at 47-48 strokes a minute, to take down the Huskies. The Badgers finished in 6:05.5 with the Huskies coming in shortly after, crossing the line in 6:09.7.
The third varsity eight, comprised of more freshmen than not, rowed a strong race to finish through only a second after the Huskies. The Badgers crossed the line in 6:10.3. The Huskies finished in 6:09.2.
Up next: The Badgers will get two weeks of training under their belts before heading to the East Coast again to compete in the Eastern Sprints in Worcester, Massachusetts, on May 15.

Head Coach Chris Clark on the varsity eight
"When you're teaching people and they're developing you have a mark, like a bulls-eye. Constantly the arrow goes to the left, to the right, it goes up, it goes down. Sure enough I would say that was this. We have a sophomore stroke -- he's learning the craft and yesterday I think they felt they were slightly out of control in that so they couldn't close out BU."
"Northeastern is an explosive group who rows very high, many strokes per minute. If you average all the strokes they take in a around a six minute race, they're probably averaging 38, 39, 40 even..."
"They essentially got all of their margin in the first 500 meters... meaning in the first quarter of the race. That was it. Our guys looked like they were rowing another kind of race, a longer race. They still don't know yet, and even believe, how hard you have to go... or that they can do that."
On the second varsity
"The second varsity... they understood the assignment, which was go off at 47-48 strokes a minute which is hot as opposed to 42 yesterday and dare Northeastern to beat them."
"They took the lead immediately and open water in probably 500 and easily held it all the way through. Northeastern got after it too so I give them credit. But, they couldn't come back from that and that is exactly what we needed from at least one of our groups. To go overboard and have faith that your conditioning will get you through it."
On the third varsityÂ
"With the 3V races yesterday... I think their combined loss is about two seconds which is much less between the two days. That is what you, again with those six freshmen in there. Four of whom are novices. They just don't 'get it' yet. They rowed lower too, much lower than Northeastern and that is all the credit. There is no rule. You can row as high and as hard as you want. It just takes a while to learn how to do that. So they were right in the thick of it. I was happy for them."
On the Eastern Sprints
"Pretty excited to get back and prepare for the Eastern Sprints. Next week we get it going and then finals week and then right back here again. This will be six-boat racing as a funny aside -- this tells you how raw kids on our team are. We talk about the Eastern Sprints and they have all asked, 'Where is that, in New Jersey?' No. It's in Worcester which is about 30 miles west of Boston. And then they ask what the format is. They don't know anything about it. Literally nothing. Because most of them have never been to it."
