Camps help aspiring pros to learn ins and outs of hockey's next level

MADISON, Wis. — Sixteen current and former Badgers attended or are still attending player development camps this month, spanning the rosters of 11 NHL clubs.

Three additional former Badgers who are transferring, or have in the past, also learned about the next level of professional hockey. Many, but not all NHL franchises held development camps.

Fresh out of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft, incoming Badger Tyson Jugnauth attended camp with the Seattle Kraken, who selected him 100th overall.

Cruz Lucius, the most recent Badger recruit, also attended his first NHL camp after the Carolina Hurricanes drafted him 124th overall.

NHL player development camps are typically held in the weeks following the NHL Entry Draft and allow teams to get acquainted with new draft selections and rising talent within the organization. Teams can invite undrafted players to attend their camps as well.

Current Badgers Brock Caufield and Anthony Kehrer reunited with 2021 All-American Linus Weissbach when they were invited to the Buffalo Sabres' camp, led by former-Wisconsin player and coach Don Granato.

Former Badger Roman Ahcan joined 2021 first round Columbus Blue Jackets draft selection Corson Ceulemans at their camp. Ahcan joined the Blue Jackets' organization after his senior season when he signed onto their AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters.

The Arizona Coyotes also boasted a pair of Badgers at their development camp. Third-round selection in 2021, Carson Bantle hit the ice with former Badger captain and 2018 third round selection Ty Emberson. However, Emberson was traded to the New York Rangers shortly after on July 14.

Rising junior Mathieu De St. Phalle, who led the Badgers in points for the 2021-22 season, was invited to the Toronto Maple Leafs' camp.

Ty Smilanic, a recent transfer forward from Quinnipiac, skated at camp with the Montreal Canadians, who selected him in the third round in 2020.

Kyle McClellan, a goalie transfer from Mercyhurst, was invited to the Minnesota Wild's development camp.
