Double Z leads Badger contingent at first world championships held in the U.S.
EUGENE, Ore. -- Former Wisconsin men's track and field standout Zach Ziemek finished third in the decathlon at the 2022 World Athletics Championships to highlight action for the Badgers at the first world track and field championship held on American soil.
"Double Z" earned his first medal at a world championship event, finishing with a personal-best score of 8,676 points at Hayward Field to capture the American's first medal in the decathlon at the world meet since Ashton Eaton won gold in 2015. A two-time Olympian, Ziemek set personal bests in the shot put (15.37 meters) and javelin (62.18 meters) during the 10-discipline event.
Three-time Olympian Mohammed Ahmed grabbed a pair of top-six finishes as the 2014 graduate placed fifth in the men's 5000 meters in 13 minutes, 10.46 seconds and sixth in the 10,000 meters in 27:30.27.
Evan Jager, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist in the men's steeplechase, placed sixth in the event at the World Athletics Championships in 8:29.08. It marked the first time that the American record holder had competed at an international championship since suffering a stress fracture in 2018.
Alicia Monson placed 13th in the women's 10,000 meters, crossing the line in 30:59.85, while Oliver Hoare advanced to the semifinals of the men's 1500.
