For just the seventh time, the Badgers will face the Terrapins this Thursday at McClimon
MADISON, Wis. - The No. 23 University of Wisconsin women's soccer team remains in Madison as it prepares to go up against the Maryland Terrapins. Since joining the Big Ten in 2014, the Badgers have played the East Coast team just six times over the past eight years.
With one of the best starts for the team and Coach Wilkins underway, the Badgers sit in stellar position as they returned to the national rankings this week as the No. 23 team in the country.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW:
1. LAST TIME OUT: Although the Badgers have found themselves scoring late into the game in their past few matchups, both their goals came in the first 45 to secure the team's eighth win in a 2-0 shutout of Indiana on Sunday. Emma Jaskaniec scored off of a set piece in the 34th minute sent in by Aidan McConnell and redirected by Adee Boer. Minutes later, Riley Philbin netted her first career goal putting in a cross from Jaskaniec.
2. HISTORY WITH MARYLAND: Due to the fact that Maryland joined the conference in the summer of 2014, the two teams have only seen each other in six contests. However, Wisconsin can feel confident coming into this matchup as the team has remained undefeated in all six of those games, winning four of them. The last time the two teams faced off, Jaskaniec scored an early goal to grab the lead which was secured later by Cameron Murtha.
3. EMMA EXTRAVAGANZA: Jaskaniec cannot be stopped as she has scored in the last eight games. Those eight goals have all been scored in an array of fashions. Whether it's in the air, outside the box, off a set piece, if the ball is near the senior she will find a way to put in the back of the net. Because of that, she currently leads the conference in both goals (9) and points (21) and holds three assists.
4. TERRAPINS ROUGH START: Maryland has battled for a consistency within their first part of the season, however, have found themselves coming out on top in only two games. Within the ten matchups the Terrapins have had since the beginning of August, the team has only scored ten goals. Maryland did come close to holding Rutgers, the fourth-ranked team in the country at the time, to a 0-0 game up until the 88th minute this past Sunday.
5. COMING UP: Following the Badgers' test against Maryland, the team will stay at home to prepare for Minnesota on Sunday, Oct. 2. Prior to the 1 p.m. kickoff, the team will celebrate the successful careers of its seven-member senior class.
