MADISON, Wis. - The No. 23 Wisconsin women's soccer team competed in its seventh matchup all-time with the Maryland Terrapins in a high-intensity game Thursday night at McClimon. The home team defended its unbeaten record in Madison this year, while also remaining undefeated in conference play with a 2-1 victory.
With the win, Wisconsin moved into the top position in the Big Ten standings, and is the only team to have won all of its conference matchups.
Although Wisconsin has held six opponents to a shutout due to its excellent defense and stellar keeping by Erin Mckinney, Maryland scored a goal in the 10th minute of the game to set the tone early. The Terrapins carried that momentum into the remainder of the first half as the pace was both fast and controlled by the opponent, as they held the Badgers to just one shot.
However, in the nine goals the Terrapins have let up this year, seven of them have come in the last 45. Just over ten minutes into the second half of the match, Rylee Howard did just that and pulled the Badgers level. After Wisconsin was granted a corner kick, Howard sat at the edge of the post moving perfectly past her defenders to put the ball in the net.
To keep the energy rolling for Wisconsin, Natalie Viggiano found herself in a position to put the team ahead. In the run of play, Aryssa Mahrt flicked the ball off to Viggiano at the top of the box, who sent a rocket into the bottom corner for her fifth goal of the season.
Although the game was an intense back-and-forth one for both teams, Wisconsin was able to hold on to its lead and obtain its ninth win of the season. The Badgers turn to Minnesota on Sunday at 1 p.m. for a Senior Day matchup, where they will honor the accomplishments of its seven-member class of 2023.
