MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin women's swimming and diving team secured 14 first-place finishes en route to a 213-87 victory over Notre Dame on Friday afternoon at the Soderholm Aquatic Center.
Multiple event winnersÂ
Senior Phoebe Bacon picked up right where she left off last season, earning an NCAA B qualifying time in the 200 individual medley with a winning time of 1:59.21. She also won the 100 back in 53.50. Kaylyn Schoof finished as the runner-up in the 100 back in 55.24.
Junior Abby Carlson also picked up two NCAA B cuts, taking first in the 200 free in 1:46.82 and first in the 500 free in 4:46.14. Abby Wanezek finished second in the 200 free in 1:50.93 while freshman Lily Gardner took third in 1:51.14. Junior Paige McKenna took second in the longer race in 4:55.89.
Sophomore Hazal Ozkan grabbed first place in the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.10 and first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:15.56.Â
Junior Mackenzie McConagha picked up wins in the 200 fly (2:00.20) and 100 fly (54.26) while sophomore Blair Stoneburg finished second in the longer race in 2:02.25. Senior Alivia Lindorfer took third in 2:03.21.
Stoneburg also won the 100 free in 49.94 while Wanezek was second in 50.73.
Freshman Hailey Tierney made an impressive debut with the Badgers, earning an NCAA B qualifying time of 22.62 in winning the 50 free. She also finished second in the 100 fly in 54.81.
Clean sweep
The Badgers completed a clean sweep in both relays, taking first, second and third in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. The team of Bacon, Ozkan, McConagha and Tierney won the medley relay in 1:40.00 while the quartet of Tierney, Carlson, Wanezek and Stoneburg touched first in the free relay in 3:20.04.
Rookie moves into top 10
Another freshman who made an impressive debut was Maddie Waggoner, who won the 1000 free in 9:43.27. Her time ranks fifth on the UW all-time performance list. McKenna finished second in 9:44.28 while Lindorfer took third in 10:05.24.
Up nextÂ
The Badgers host Arizona and Michigan on Oct. 20-21 at Soderholm Aquatic Center. Events begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
