Jaskaniec and Ishaug score second-half goals to advance in NCAA Tournament
MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin women's soccer team (14-4-4) played in-state rivals, UW-Milwaukee (12-3-5), in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Nov. 10. Emma Jaskaniec and Maddie Ishaug came alive in the second to earn the 2-0 win. The Badgers now head to Tallahassee, Fla. to face No. 5 Texas; Time and date are to be determined.
How it happened
The Badgers had home-field advantage at the McClimon Soccer Complex for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Both Milwaukee and Wisconsin battled it out the first half, but the Badgers dominated possession. The Badgers kept getting called for fouls, while the Panthers claimed nil in the first half.
The best chance of the half came from Taylor Gordon, who hit the post off a corner with two minutes remaining in the half.
Heading into the break, the Badgers were knocking on the door but the score remained 0-0. The team out-shot the Panthers 7-1.
It was all Wisconsin to start the second half, pinning Milwaukee in its own half. The Badgers finally got on the board in the 60th minute. A clearance off a Wisconsin corner fell to Ishaug, who hit the ball first time from outside the box. Jaskaniec redirected it into the back of the next to get the opener. Jaskaniec extended her season total to 12 goals and four assists.
Ishaug proceeded to seal the win in the 67th minute off a nearly identical setup to the first goal. A poor clearance by Milwaukee off a corner once again fell to the junior. This time, Ishaug hit the ball on the volley, and after a deflection off a Milwaukee defender, ended up in the upper right corner of the goal. It was Ishaug's first goal of the season, bringing her season total to one goal and two assists.
This will be the Badgers' 18th appearance in the second round of the tournament. Wisconsin last made it to the Sweet 16 in 2021 where they dropped to Santa Clara in the nation's capital.
