MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin men's track and field broke a school record at the Alex Wilson Invitational on Saturday and won seven events at the Badgers' Valentine Invitational on Friday afternoon at The Shell. Several Badgers recorded personal bests and moved up on the UW top-10 performance lists.
Record breaking DMR
Looking to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, the distance medley relay team of
Colin Enz,
Abdullahi Hassan,
Adam Spencer, and
Jackson Sharp combined to break their own school record as well as set a new Big Ten Conference mark. Spencer kicked off the relay with a 2:49.0 leg in the 1200 meters. Enz followed with a 46.3 time in the meters before Hassan ran 1:46.5 for 800 meters. Sharp anchored the relay with a 3:57.9 1600-meter leg as the team tied for first in 9 minutes, 19.99 seconds.
Wisconsin becomes one of only five teams in NCAA history to run a sub-9:20 time in the relay. It is also tied for the fifth best performance on the all-time world list. For this season, the Badgers lead the Big Ten and rank third nationally.
Badgers sweep the weight throw
Grad student
Sam Coil won the weight throw, recording a personal best of 73 feet, 9 ½ inches. His throw moves him into second all-time at UW, second in the Big Ten this season, and sixth in the nation.
Jason Swarens finished second, throwing a personal best of 71-2, landing him fourth all-time at UW and sixth in the Big Ten this season.
Cole Hooper placed third, spinning to a personal best of 68-3 ¾, ranking him seventh at UW and ninth in the Big Ten this season. Redshirt sophomore
Nick Tomasovic finished fourth also throwing a personal best of 62-0 ½ and redshirt freshman Jake Schaefer placed fifth with a toss of 59-3.
Swarens also won the men's shot put with a toss of 61-6 ¾.
Freshman runs top time in hurdles
Freshman
Giovanni Wearing ran an incredible race in the 60-meter hurdles, winning the event in a personal best time of 7.90. Wearing is now tied for sixth all-time at UW and 10th in the Big Ten this season.
Quinn Lansill placed second running a time of 8.31.
In the open 60 meters, redshirt sophomore
Sam Amusan won in 6.90.
Pierce Seigne won the 800 meters, running a personal best of 1:54.64, and
Logan Measner placed third with a time of 1:56.96.
Robby Hatch won the 400 meters with a time of 49.84 while
Elliott Harris placed second in 49.95.
Redshirt senior
Cade Amborn won the men's pole vault with a personal best clearance of 15-10. Sophomore
Hunter Cook placed second at 15-6 ¼.
In the long jump,
Justin Kiefel finished third with a leap of 21-11 and
Quinn Lansill placed fifth at 20-9 ¼.
