Wisconsin’s season comes to an end at No. 4 Michigan

Badger overcome three-goal deficit, but fall late to Wolverines
ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The Wisconsin men's hockey team battled back from a three-goal deficit to tie the game and fought second-seed Michigan down to the final minute in game two of the Big Ten tournament quarterfinals at Yost Ice Arena, but ultimately dropped a 7-4 decision to the Wolverines.
Mathieu De St. Phalle tallied back-to-back goals in the second period and Carson Bantle scored in the third to tie the game at 4-4, but it wasn't enough to fend off the No. 4 Wolverines, who took the lead late in the third and added a pair of insurance goals to win 7-4 and claim the series.
Rutger McGroarty opened the scoring for the Wolverines 8:05 into the first period. Adam Fantilli broke out the puck in the neutral zone for Mackie Samoskevich who set up McGroarty for a backdoor goal.
Lucius found the back of the net on the Badgers' first power play of the game to tie the score. De St. Phalle intercepted a pass near the blue line inside Michigan's zone. He dropped the puck for Lucius who drove to the net and dished a pass right back to De St. Phalle. He found Lucius on the backdoor where he tapped the puck past goaltender Erik Portillo.
The Wolverines regained their lead on the power play at 13:43 in the first. Fantilli's centering pass bounced off a Badgers' skate and past goaltender Jared Moe for the score.
Fantilli netted his second goal of the game at 18:58 in the first, set up by Steven Holtz and Jay Keranen.
Michigan jumped to a 4-1 lead 31 seconds into the second frame when Fantilli completed his natural hat trick with a point wrister that found its way through a screen and into the net.
De St. Phalle added a pair of goals to put the Badgers within one of Michigan's lead.
Dominick Mersch provided Lucius with a give-and-go pass near the Wolverines' blue line. The freshman hit De St. Phalle with a pass as he trailed into the zone and lined up a wrist shot that trickled past Michigan's Erik Portillo for the goal at 13:51 in the second.
With just over a minute remaining in the second, De St. Phalle scored his second tally of the night to cut the deficit to one goal. Carson Bantle battled for the puck in the corner and fed a pass to Caulfield down low. He wheeled behind the net and set up De St. Phalle in front of the net where he roofed the puck past Portillo.
The Badgers skated into the third period trailing Michigan 4-3.
Bantle tied the score for Wisconsin 3:09 into the final frame. Tyson Jugnauth got the puck on the point off the faceoff and fired a shot wide of the net and off the back boards. Caufield collected the rebound and threaded a pass across the crease to Bantle who stood ready to tap the puck in the back door.
The Wolverines broke the stalemate at 17:40 in the third when Nolan Moyle banked in a pass from Frank Nazar and Dylan Duke.
Less than a minute later, T.J. Hughes scored an issuance goal assisted by Luke Hughes.
Samoskevich added an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation to win it 7-4 for Michigan and advance to the Big Ten tournament semifinals.
Goaltender Jared Moe recorded 36 saves and the Badgers posted 40 shots on goal in their final game of the 2022-23 season.
