Zargo and Liegel lead Badgers with wins by fall
HAMPTON, Va. — Led by pins from Joseph Zargo and Shane Liegel, No. 17 Wisconsin knocked off Virginia on Saturday 27-13 at the 2024 Virginia Duals.
The victory gave the Badgers an undefeated record at the dual-match tournament held at the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia after UW defeated No. 21 Oklahoma 22-16 on Friday, Jan. 12. Wisconsin also improved to 6-1 overall as the team prepares for the Big Ten dual season starting next week.
The Badgers won six of 10 bouts against the Cavaliers, including four bonus-point victories.
Eric Barnett earned his second major decision of the weekend with a 11-1 win against Kyle Montaperto to open the dual match. Barnett scored two takedowns, a reversal and a two-point nearfall in the victory.
Nicolar Rivera fought his way through to a 10-7 decision against Gable Porter. Rivera scored three takedowns and fended off a late rally in the closing seconds to clinch the victory.
Zargo was well on his way to a tech fall after scoring five takedowns and leading UVA's Luke Roberts 16-3 in the third period. The Badger scored his last takedown and then caught his opponent in a turn for the pin at 5:33 to huge cheers from his teammates.
Dean Hamiti collected his 15th bonus-point victory and fourth victory by tech fall with a 20-5 win in 3:39 against Virginia's Michael Murphy at 165. He scored six takedowns against Murphy in the dominating win, including five in just the first period.
Max Maylor earned a gritty upset of Virginia's Justin McCoy in a 2-1 decision in sudden victory. Ranked No. 18 by Intermat at 174 pounds, Maylor and 13th-ranked McCoy fought through a scoreless first period before Maylor took a 1-0 lead in the second with an escape. McCoy tied the bout 1-1 in the third period with his own escape as regulation time ran out. Now in overtime, Maylor won the match after McCoy was called for stalling and the officials awarded Maylor the point and the ensuing 2-1 win in sudden victory.
Wisconsin's Shane Liegel delivered the Badgers' match-winning victory with his pin in 5:47 of Dylan Newsome. Down 3-0 early in the first period, Liegel worked his way back to a 10-3 lead in the final period including two takedowns and a reversal. He then caught Newsome for the pin with just eight seconds left in the bout. This is also Liegel's first pin of the season and as a Badger.
Virginia won bouts at 141, 157, 197 and 285 pounds.
The Badgers return home to host No. 11 Ohio State on Sunday, January 21 at 2 p.m. CT at the UW Field House. The home match opens the Big Ten dual season and is also Youth Team Day.
