NOTRE DAME, Ind. – A Badger penalty midway through overtime proved to be fatal as the Wisconsin men's hockey team fell, 3-2 in overtime, to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday night at Compton Family Ice Arena.
Despite the loss, the Badgers gain a point in the Big Ten standings, bringing their total up to two points in three conference games.
Notre Dame (5-2-0, 1-0-0 Big Ten) got on the board first with 12:22 remaining in the first period. Neither team lit the lamp until five minutes left in the second period when Wisconsin's (1-6-0, 0-3-0 Big Ten) Ryan Botterill scored his first NCAA goal on the power play. Three minutes later, Owen Lindmark gave the Badgers their first lead of the evening, but Notre Dame responded 31 seconds later, with 1:13 left in the period, to make it a 2-2 game. It stayed that way until overtime. A Badger power play late in the third period that trickled into overtime quickly became a three-on-three, then an Irish overtime power play, which they capitalized on to earn the extra conference point.
How it Happened
Notre Dame got on the board first 7:38 into the first period on a goal from Henry Nelson.
The second period was quiet until freshman forward Botterill got Wisconsin on the board with 4:58 remaining in the frame. Junior forward Tyson Dyck passed from the top of the right circle up to freshman defenseman Logan Hensler at the blue line. Hensler took a shot that Botterill redirected from the slot to tally his first-career NCAA goal.

Ben Dexheimer in the middle of Wisconsin's zone. Dexheimer rushed the puck through neutral ice and passed to Lindmark who was waiting at the left side of the blue line. Lindmark skated through the zone, using a few defensive maneuvers to evade Notre Dame players, and took a shot from a sharp angle past the right side of ND goaltender Owen Say to make it 2-1, Wisconsin.
The Irish tied the game 31 seconds later after a point shot hit Notre's Dames Brennan Ali and barely crossed the UW goal line.
Neither team scored in the third period as the contest went to overtime tied at two.
Wisconsin earned a power play with 21 seconds left in regulation and began overtime with an extra skater. However, 1:15 into overtime, a penalty was called on the Badgers, so both teams skated with three players for 24 seconds. After the three-on-three play expired, ND's power play started, and Cole Knuble capitalized on the opportunity for the Irish, scoring the game-winner with 2:49 left in the extra time.
Wisconsin went 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill. UW finished the contest with a 44-24 advantage in shots on goal.
