Senior transfer earns first career conference weekly honor
MADISON, Wis. – Senior goaltender Tommy Scarfone posted a 26-save shutout on Friday and had a 33-save showing on Saturday during Wisconsin's win and overtime loss against then-No. 1 Michigan State at the Kohl Center to earn Big Ten's First Star of the Week, the conference announced on Tuesday.
In Friday's game against the Spartans, Scarfone made 26 saves to backstop the Badgers to a 4-0 victory over the No. 1 team in the country. It marked the senior's first shutout with Wisconsin and UW's first shutout since former senior goaltender Kyle McClellan made 27 saves in the Badgers' 6-0 win at Penn State on Feb. 23, 2024. Scarfone's perfect performance helped him record his 10th-career shutout in his 100th collegiate game, and he picked up his 60th-career win to rank second in wins among active NCAA goalies.
On Saturday, Scarfone made 33 saves, including 16 in the second period and four in overtime, in Wisconsin's 3-2 overtime loss to MSU. He finished the series with a .952 save percentage and 1.46 goals-allowed on average through two games to help the Badgers earn four of six possible conference points available on the weekend.Â
Over 11 games played this year, the Montreal, Quebec, native has five wins, accumulating a .910 save percentage and a 2.24 goals-against average.
This marks Scarfone's first career Big Ten weekly honor and Wisconsin's third of the 2024-25Â season.
The most recent Badger to receive a Big Ten Star of the Week was graduate student forward Ryland Mosley, who was named the conference's second star on Dec. 3, 2024.Â
Scarfone and the Badger men's hockey team are preparing to visit No. 8 Michigan for their final B1G series of the year on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 13-14. Friday's game starts at 5 p.m. CT and is televised on the Big Ten Network, while Saturday's contest begins at 6 p.m. and streams on B1G+.
