Badgers close regular season on the road
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa — No. 26 Wisconsin closed its regular season on the road with a 27-11 loss to No. 16 UNI.
The Badgers won three of 10 bouts and were led in scoring by fifth-ranked Dean Hamiti at 165 pounds with a 18-2 tech fall in 6:35 over UNI's Jack Thomsen.
Hamiti scored five takedowns in the victory, improving to 24-1 overall and 15-1 in duals this season. Ranked as the No. 3 Most Dominant Wrestler in the NCAA's latest standings, the tech fall also gives Hamiti 20 bonus-point wins (8 pins, 7 tech falls, 5 major decisions).
No. 6 Eric Barnett opened the dual with a 6-1 decision win over UNI's No. 26 Trever Anderson at 125, using a takedown, reversal and riding time to improve to 22-4 overall this season and 98-37 in his collegiate career.
No. 16 Joseph Zargo collected a gritty 3-1 decision against the Panthers' Adam Allard at 149. Scoreless after the first period, Zargo scored points on a reversal for a 2-0 lead then held off Allard in the third period after his opponent scored an escape to make it 2-1 as time ran out. He picked up the extra point with riding time over Allard. Zargo is now 18-6 overall this season.
Wisconsin lost narrow decisions at 133 and 157. Both unranked, Nicolar Rivera lost a 9-4 decision to 25th-ranked Julian Farber at 133, while Luke Mechler lost a 5-3 decision due to a closing-minute takedown to 14th-ranked Ryder Downey.
Wisconsin now prepares for the 2024 Big Ten Championships held March 9-10 in College Park, Maryland and hosted by the Terrapins.
