Seven UW sport programs land perfect NCAA APR scores

The Badgers continue to excel in academic progress rate
MADISON, Wis. -- A school-record seven University of Wisconsin athletic teams achieved perfect multiyear scores in the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data released by the NCAA on Tuesday as part of the annual NCAA Division I Academic Performance Program. Men's golf, men's tennis, wrestling, women's cross country, women's golf, women's swimming and diving and women's tennis all notched perfect (1000) multi-year scores.Â
The data for all schools includes the most current multiyear cohort (2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 academic years). Wisconsin's all-sport APR multiyear average was 992, which is above the national average of 984 and meets one of the academic achievement unit benchmarks for the NCAA.
The APR is a real-time measure of a team's academic performance and is calculated by reviewing variables such as eligibility, retention and graduation rates of student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. Every Division I sports team across the nation calculates its APR each academic year, similar to a report card. Scholarship student-athletes each semester earn one point for remaining eligible and one point for staying in school or graduating.
As tracked through the APR, more than 14,000 former college athletes have returned to school to get their degrees since the NCAA created the measurement tool. Each of those students earns back a lost APR point for their team.
